When asked where diamonds come from, the overwhelming majority will say Africa. However diamonds are found all over the world, including right here in the USA. There is one place in particular that is a real treasure as it is the only place in the world that is open to the public.
On average, two diamonds a day are found at the Crater of Diamonds State Park located in Murfreesboro Arkansas. They’re usually white, brown, or yellow in color, and usually quite small in size. However a find made this week by a local Arkansas man is quite extraordinary.
On Monday, local treasure hunter David Anderson was washing the dirt from his first hole of the day when he spotted it. A “pale yellow, very shiny diamond about the size of a dime”, to be precise the diamond weighed in at 3.83 carats. David, who has found many diamonds at the park including 6 weighing over a carat was stunned. “This one is the largest of all my diamond finds, he said citing the reasons for his “passion for treasure hunting” as the secret to his success. “You wonder what’s going to be in the next bucket. I’m still looking for an even bigger diamond.”

And he may not be searching in vain. Anderson’s nearly 4 carat ‘Wolverine Diamond’, named for his favorite sports team, is nowhere near the largest ever found at the park. That honor goes to the Uncle Sam Diamond found in 1924. Uncle Sam weighed a whopping 40.23 carats in the rough and produced a 12.42 carat emerald-cut stone. Not a bad deal considering the park’s “Finders-Keepers” motto.
So my advice would be to skip that Parisian vacation and head over to Arkansas, rent a shovel, and get digging. Fame and fortune could be just a scoopful of dirt away!
