It’s Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, whatever you want to call it, it’s today. Wohooo! A day when you can eat, drink, and be merry all you want. And not only is merriment suggested, it’s actually a requirement. However, this is not a Mardi Gras parade, much as I wish it were, and I will not be throwing beads at you… because, let’s face it, you could be in Cleveland for all I know, and I can’t throw that far. What I can do though, is “throw” up some pictures of my favorite Mardi Gras colored jewelry. I’m talking purple, green, and gold! Ta da!
So grab a donut, or two, and much away while I give you a little backstory on what is arguably one of my favorite holidays. And don’t worry, there will be jewelry sprinkled throughout, this is a jewelry themed blog after all. So, first and foremost, Mardi Gras isn’t just one day. It’s a season starting right after epiphany, but it culminates in a rip snorting festival on the day before Ash Wednesday. Leave it to the Catholics to use a season of penance and reflection as an excuse to throw a wild party! And what a party it is, Mardi Gras is actually French for Fat Tuesday which refers to the practice of eating rich, fatty foods before the fast. Mardi Gras is celebrated all over the world from the celebrations in New Orleans, to Rio, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and many more. And you don’t have to be Catholic to celebrate. All you need is a love of green, gold, and purple, and the overwhelming desire to have a good reason to eat cake!
Now that we’ve established what Mardi Gras is, and that everyone should be celebrating, let’s move on to those colors, and of course jewelry. This is the part where you can be creative and really have fun with the theme. Green can be emerald like the ring above, or crisp and refreshing like these Green Quartz earrings. Set in 14k white gold, these earrings are quite substantial with surprise diamond detailing on the baskets. These are the perfect earrings for the Mardi Gras reveler who longs for the warmth of spring.
If purple’s on your mind, then look no further than the birthstone of February, Amethyst. Like the necklace above, and the one below, amethyst comes in many hues, but none are more prized than deep purple. These beautiful amethyst pieces remind me of jolly ranchers with their deep, candy color. I could get lost in that purple. And what makes Amethyst better? Diamonds of course, such as the baguette diamonds surrounding the pear shaped amethyst, and the round brilliants accenting the round amethyst. Diamonds make everything better, even diamonds.
This is the case with the gorgeous yellow diamond below. The white round brilliants bring out the stunning golden hues of the yellow diamond. But gold can be lots of things in jewelry from golden yellow diamonds, to golden citrines, to well, gold. And yellow gold is making a huge comeback in jewelry recently. We love its rich hues, and the warmth that it gives off. Yellow gold settings like the one above, really make white diamonds pop!
So, what are you waiting for? Come on over and pick out your Mardi Gras jewelry today! And don’t forget to bring us donuts, or cupcakes, really anything with chocolate will do! And don't forget to laissez les bons temps rouler! Let the good times roll!
